The validity of TOEFL Scores
TOEFL stands for ‘Test of English as a Foreign Language’. It is a standardized examination that is intended to evaluate the competency of non-indigenous speakers in the English language.
Score Validity :- Unlike most academic examination scores that remain legally valid for an indefinite period, the TOEFL scores are valid for only two years. After their expiration date, TOEFL scores become annulled and inaccessible online. The relatively short life cycle of TOEFL scores is key as it ensures that prospective employers and academic institutions obtain a fairly up to date overview of one's proficiency in the language. Its common knowledge that one's abilities in a foreign language changes over time. This change can be a result of general improvement in proficiency, therefore positive, or it can be a gradual decline of competency as a result of inadequate practice. This explains why TOEFL scores have a validity timeframe.
Implications of the Validity Expiration :- The expiration of the scores implies that students and professionals must have a properly planned schedule to ensure that they will have valid TOEFL scores for all their intents and purposes. Whilst the Educational Testing Service (ETS), the organization which designs and administers the tests, has a rigid two-year validity policy as mentioned previously, it is also vital that candidates acquaint themselves with the TOEFL validity policies of the various institutions or organizations which they will be intending to engage.
It has been observed that some institutions demand
that the applicant's TOEFL scores should be valid on the application deadlines
whereas others insist that they need to be valid on the first date of
engagement with the individual. These are just but two examples of the various
policies that are implemented at different organizations. Most institutions
usually specify their requirements on their admission pages, however, in the
absence of such, an email or a call to verify organizational policy on the
matter will help.
Exam Re-takes :- Fortunately, the TOEFL candidates are allowed to retake the exam when twelve days from the date of the previous examination has elapsed. Therefore, if one finds himself or herself in a situation where he or she is worried about the validity of his or her TOEFL score, there is always that option of retaking the test provided a time interval of twelve days or more has gone by from the previous attempt.
It is also for candidates to note that the ETS
reserves the right to invalidate a score at any given time before the generally
stipulated two years if there is sufficient evidence to prove that a candidate
engaged in examination malpractice during the test. Untimely invalidation can
also be caused by the failure of the administrator of the test to adhere to
examination regulations. Therefore, it is of paramount importance that
candidates desist from engaging in unethical examination practice to avoid the
inconvenience of having their TOEFL scores nullified untimely. It is also
because of that reason that candidates are encouraged to take the test under
the supervision of reputable administers who are known to be compliant with
test rules and regulations.
