About TOEFL IBT

The Test of English as a Foreign Language internet-based test (TOEFL IBT) is an online version of the world-renowned English language proficiency examination administered by Educational Testing Service (ETS). It assesses the candidates’ English reading, speaking, writing and listening skills. What started as a paper-based test evolved into a computer-based test until morphing completely into an internet-based examination in 2006. The TOEFL (paper-based test) is still administered in some areas. It is believed that over 30 million people have attained the TOEFL certificate.

Why have a TOEFL certificate?

The TOEFL IBT test aims at producing a confident English speaking, hearing, listening and writing graduate who can find his/her space easily amongst the educated. The test is a prerequisite in many universities around the globe. Over eleven thousand (11,000) universities accept a TOEFL certificate for foreign students’ admission. It is used to gauge the candidate’s competency when they are exposed to an English-speaking based academic or professional environment.

Some developed countries require that Non-English speaking/natives have a TOEFL certificate to determine their proficiency in the English language when they apply for work, residence, and study visas. Authorities and/or universities in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the United States of America, United Kingdom, and across Europe and Asia require such a certificate. If you are thinking of relocating or studying abroad, you definitely need a TOEFL certificate.

How often is the TOEFL IBT test conducted?

Unlike any other online tests, the TOEFL IBT is offered at least 60 times during the course of the year. You can find an exam opening in a week or scheduled months later. With a presence in over 150 countries, it should be relatively easy to find a TOEFL IBT accredited test center near your location. You are allowed to retake the TOEFL test after 12 days from your first attempt.

Registering for TOEFL

You can register online, on the phone, in person or by mail. It is important to check and choose the most convenient examination center for you before registering for an examination. We recommend using the ETS website for online registration. You will need to create a TOEFL profile. Online registration can be done anytime from anywhere. If not sure of the online registration, we recommend you visit a TOEFL center for assistance. There is no specific age limit for TOEFL applicants but candidates who successfully passed their high school or equivalent can write the test.

Characteristic of the TOEFL IBT

The TOEFL IBT test is three (3) hours long since August 2019. It is divided into four sections with each section assessing one basic skill as well as their integrated connection in everyday use. The 4 basic language skills the test examines on are: reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Your final score is cumulative of your scores in the four key areas. You can access your test results 10 days after your examination day. The results are valid for a 2-year period.

TOEFL IBT Price

The price range is different from country to country, ranging between US$160 and US$250. Other services like rescheduling the exam, score reviews and late registration etc. carry an additional fee. Candidates must pay the full fees before they sit for the examination.
