The advantage in taking GRE General Test over GMAT is that the former does not restrict your entry to one type of university. On the other hand, GMAT is solely for admission in B- schools. With GRE, being one of the standardized test, your quantitative, verbal and analytical skills are scrutinized. The revised version of this test (GRE) is structured in such a style that the test takers holistic approach is evaluated; it is said that it was changed in order to go in accord with the grounds required by the prestigious business schools. 

The ETS (Educational Testing Service) website has also designed a conversion scale wherein the applicant can get an idea of the corresponding GMAT score by entering their GRE score.
